The evolution of the factory model in the scene
The concept art I was given
This is some of my most recent work that I have done for the recently released film, Chicken Town. This was my first experience after my time after university working for a director who wanted me to help with their film. I was tasked with adding a larger factory building to the already recorded footage to make it more consistent with internal footage recorded elsewhere.
I was provided with the source footage and the concept art to create a cg model inside Blender that I would then later edit into the footage using Nuke. In order to save time on modelling and compositing I realised that it would be easier to keep parts of the original footage to save time on modelling as it matched the art I was given.
Throughout this project I was making sure that I provided frequent updates on my work so that I could receive feedback from the director and designer - such as adding and adjusting the text on the factory that was not there on the original concept art I was given.
I also had to get a bit creative with parts of my compositing as I only had a limited time to use the full version of Nuke so I had to figure out a way to limit the amount of rotoscoping I would have to do. Fortunately as the camera was in a static position I was able to use that as a way to create a mask using the difference in colours between the actors and backdrop. Whilst this provided some of a mask I had to manually paint in some parts myself as large chunks of the actors were missing in areas where there was not much colour differences.
This project felt like the culmination of the knowledge that I had learnt about Nuke in university and I am very happy with the results!
